The Griswolds – Beware the Dog

Song: Beware the Dog by The Griswolds

Genre: Indie-Rock

Mood: Good Vibes

About the Music: This group is from Sydney, Australia and has been compared to bands like Vampire Weekend. They named the band after the main family in the 1980’s movie series National Lampoon’s Vacation with Chevy Chase – which goes along with their 80’s inspired sound. Shout out to my friend Josh who recommended the song to me – I really like it.

Although this song is upbeat and fun, the lyrics have a deeper and unexpected meaning.

“… It’s about losing someone we were really close with to heavy drug use. ‘Beware the Dog’ is about that journey – the good and the bad times.” – Explanation of the song by vocalist Chris Whitehall

Aside from making me want to dance, I like that this song has a personal connection to the band. In life, you have to take the bad with the good. Some people can’t shake it, some people pretend it never happened and others look back, reminisce and learn from it.  I think that the latter is what they did; they took something that was difficult in their lives and transformed it using what they know and love – music. Not to mention, it’s pretty catchy.

If you want to hear more, check them out! Their album Be Impressive was released August 22, 2014.

Tove Lo – Not On Drugs

Song: Not On Drugs by Tove Lo

Genre: Dance-Pop

Mood: Happy, In Love

About the Music: You might know this artist from her song “Habits” which today is number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100. Tove Lo, pronounced “Tooveh Lu”, is a Swedish singer/songwriter who has written songs for artists such as Icona Pop. Her sound and music inspiration was sparked by her love of Nirvana and grunge when she was 12. From grunge, she gravitated towards the eclectic sounds of pop.

Personally, I love her music style and her lyrical content. She is bold and transparent; not afraid or shy to convey how she is really feeling and paints a vivid picture of her state of mind in each song. Even though she has stated she is not interested in being famous, I think she shows great potential. Her passion for what she does will lead her to a huge fan base and respect from her peers. Her most recent EP, Truth Serum, is a documentary of her most recent and heartbreaking relationship.

This song is about the burst of raw and exciting emotions in the beginning of a relationship. The euphoric feeling of being on “Cloud 9.” You lose a sense of reality and let go of your fears, allowing yourself to completely give in to the rush of happiness you feel. In the song, she sees new colors, lives in the sky, and even asks her significant other to join her – all while assuring them her elusive behavior isn’t the result of drugs, it’s the result of being in love.

Although she choked on paint and was blinded by smoke in the process, this music video was made to show how crazy and intense Tove Lo feels when she falls in love.

YoungeBlood Hawke – We Come Running

Artist: We Come Running by YoungeBlood Hawke

Genre: Indie-pop

Mood: Upbeat, Fun

About the Music: An oldie, but one of my favorites – this song is about determination and recognizing your potential. When it was released, the group stated they considered it to be their “personal anthem.” No matter how bad or discouraging things seemed for the band, they never allowed it to get them down. It’s upbeat, uplifting and fun; a testament to the kind of band they are and a showcase of their perseverance.

Say What?! – This video was put together by the band, not only to release their first single and have an amazing experience doing it, but also to promote the conservation of sharks. They hoped this video would show how majestic and misunderstood these creatures are, since they are surrounded by negative stigma and the killing of sharks put them at risk of being endangered.

“Sharks are being slaughtered and are in danger of being wiped out,” adds the group. “They play a vital role in the food chain and without them, the ecosystem could not survive. Being close enough to have these majestic creatures brush past us was an experience that words cannot describe. They were intelligent, curious and represent the power and mystery of nature. We’d like to be a part of preserving that. Hopefully, this video will help shine a light on the importance of these gorgeous, misunderstood animals and their important role in our ecosystem.”

The Colourist – Little Games

Artist: Little Games by The Colourist

Genre: Indie-pop

Mood: Upbeat

About the Music: Another song post for The Colourist, and it doesn’t stop here! The more I listen to them the more I like them.

This song has a fun, electronic, indie-pop sound. Adam Castilla and Maya TuttleI are the lead singers; their voices compliment each other, creating a unique and addictive sound. Maya’s voice reminds me of Emily Haines, the lead singer of Metric. Maya is also the drummer of the band – which is pretty B.A.

Their LPThe Colouristwas released in March of this year. I would definitely encourage you to check them out if you like what you hear.

Clean Bandit – Extraordinary

Song: Extraordinary by Clean Bandit

Genre: Classical, Synthpop

Mood: Upbeat, Fun

About the Music: You probably know this band from their single “Rather Be“, which in 2014 topped the charts in the UK and landed a spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. Their music is a combination of classical and pop music; infusing the elegant sounds of the violin and cello with electronic dance. They follow their own rules, producing the music themselves and finding other artists they admire to sing and collaborate with.

This is a beautiful video that was shot, with the help of a few friends, on the beaches and streets of Cuba.

“(Cuba’s) an incredible country – unlike anywhere else we have ever been to. We wanted to capture the euphoric feeling of the music in sunshine and dancing.” – Grace Chatto (Cello/Vocals)

Troye Sivan – Happy Little Pill

Song: Happy Little Pill by Troye Sivan

Genre: Pop

Mood: Mellow

About the Music:  This song is melodic and calming; his smooth voice and electronic undertones got me hooked. All in all, it has a good, fluid beat. I was recommended this song by my brother; I had not heard of him before so I looked him up.

Originally from South Africa, where he was born, he launched his career in Australia. He is a well-known YouTuber, who some claim to be the next Justin Bieber. Watching a few of his videos, I can say his personality is lovable, charming, and, more than anything, grateful for all the love and support from his fans.

In addition to being passionate about music and singing, he is also an actor. Does he look familiar?! If you are an X-Men, fan you might recognize him as the young James Logan Howlett in the blockbuster movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine. – I actually saw this movie in theaters, so I was surprised to learn that.

Needless to say, I was very impressed. He has a lot going for him and I’m looking forward to seeing where he goes from here. His EP, which includes this song, came out on August 15th, 2014.
