Electric Guest – This Head I Hold

Song: This Head I Hold by Electric Guest

Genre: Indie-Pop

Mood: Good Vibes

About the Music: This eclectic band came out of LA in 2012, and is made up of singer/songwriter Asa Taccone and drummer Matthew Compton. They were just two guys making music in a house full of musicians and artists before their album was picked up and produced by Brian Burton (AKA  Danger Mouse from Gnarls Barkley and the producer of Gorillaz, The Black Keys and Beck) – Not too shabby. From there, Electric Guest put out their first album Mondo.

Although they have an electronic vibe, the lead singers voice adds a soulful element. The combination creates an engaging and unique sound. I love it. At first when I heard it I didn’t know how to feel about it; was it electronic? Pop? 70’s Retro? What ever it was, I didn’t want to stop listening to it. The song is upbeat and slightly nostalgic. It’s an infusion of sounds and effects from current and past decade influences.

In addition to the overall sound, I like the lyrics. The song is about breaking free of cultural norms and pressures and allowing yourself to be something of your own creation. A message I find empowering and one I personally I connect to.

“… “This Head I Hold” is kind of open ended in terms of what you can take away from it, but for me I like to think of it as kind of this constant reminder that you don’t have to follow in the steps of whatever kind of culture you’re apart of or whatever your society says you should or shouldn’t do … because for me, I think we’re kind of in a time where, like culturally we could break some of the patterns that we’re stuck in.” – Explanation of the song by Asa Taccone.

I can see it being one of those songs I play after a long and stressful day, something that could snap me back into a good mood. I feel like the happy feeling you get from it is contagious. Shout out to my friend Tay for suggesting this song – I dig it.

If you like it, you should also check out Under the Gun, another song I like by them.
